‘Benefits to bricks’

Not directly relevant to baugruppen but still interesting as an indication of a shift in housing public policy: housing benefit funds may be devolved to pay for social housing. The IPPR recommended this, and the Commission on London Finance, established by the mayor, now backs it.

  1. Can things ever be simple enough? Probably not. Tony Belton, long-standing Wandsworth councillor:

Labour councillor Nigel Morgan and I argued that straight opposition to sales was never going to work. We foresaw the consequential modern disaster of the lack of social housing and, therefore, argued that capital receipts should be used to build replacements. But this was a sophisticated position, which got lost in the ferocious and noisy national battle over the issue.
